THE “PANTUFFE”: MY VENETIAN WALKING SLIPPERS

Antonia Sautter

Among my fashion creations inspired by Venice, there is one that is particularly unique, a type of traditional shoe which I consider contemporary, ethical and incredibly chic: the Venetian walking slipper.

Their original name was “friulane” and they used to be worn by gondoliers to aid their grip and not to scrape the precious wood of their elegant boats. I renamed them “Pantuffe” and hand-decorated them with precious ornaments: as such, they represent a great way of safeguarding the tradition of Italian footwear.

Very comfortable, they also carry a surprisingly contemporary philosophy:
one that safeguards precious creative know-how and recycles materials.

Created in the first years of the 20th century in Friuli, a region located to the north of Venice, the “papusse” or “babbucce”, as they still call them there, were pauper shoes, made of scraps of material with soles made from bicycle tyres. Their ecologic soul makes them really contemporary, so much so that I can say in some way the “Pantuffe” are looking to the future.

But recycling is not their only interesting feature. In fact, the light feel and comfort experienced by those who wear them combined with their decoration, make the “Pantuffe” unique and absolutely glamourous.

In a world where luxury is something paraded around with vulgarity, to grasp its real significance is to go back to the simple things that represent us and that express us. This is why the Pantuffa is, without doubt, a luxurious and sustainable item.

I personally coined this neologism, “Pantuffa”, thinking of the eastern babuche, the French pantufle and the Italian babbuccia. I mixed all of these words together and I came up with this curious expression that, in my opinion, really represents all these words.

In my workshop, located in the historical centre of Venice, where I create my velvets printing them one by one, by hand, I created a new version of this shoe in terms of style and gave it an original look for two reasons: firstly every pattern is one of a kind, secondly these decorations can be created to the customers specifications.

In order to make your wardrobe look even more exclusive and unique, it is possible to personalize your “Pantuffe” by creating and printing a monogram, a symbol, the initials of a name or a specific sentence. This is an exclusive service that I offer to those who want this accessory to be something that expresses their personality, a touche de style that contemporary fashion seldom offers.

Eclectic and unisex, the “Pantuffe” are a real must-have for those who want to stand out from the crowd. They are perfect both for day wear or to give an exotic touch to your evening outfit, combined with an elegant dress or kimono.
