Getting married in Venice means having your wish come true, your wish for the most beautiful, romantic fairy tale. Being a wedding planner in Venice entails being romantic, getting easily moved and having a couple of fairy tales waiting to be told inside of your heart. Today I would like to tell you a story that I wrote a while ago and that, like all fairy tales, conceals a hidden truth. It’s called “The Doge In Love”.
“Once upon a time there was Venice, the most flourishing and important city in the whole of Europe. Her King, the Doge, had been living alone in a wonderful palace overlooking the lagoon for many years.
During his life many noble ladies had asked for his hand, but none of them were able to conquer his heart, because he was searching for Love, Love with a capital L.
Sad, lonely and resigned to his destiny, the Doge used to walk at night under the loggia of his palace. Contemplating the lagoon, he would sigh like a lover who would have to wait forever. The years passed by relentlessly. However, one night, on a full moon , something extraordinary happened.
All of a sudden, the calm smooth water of the lagoon rippled from the movement of an enchanting feminine form floating on the water under the moonlight. As soon as she saw the Doge, the mysterious creature drew closer to the palace and started dancing and singing for him.
She was a mermaid , with delicate facial features and long, beautiful golden hair. Inside of her heart she held the soul of a young woman who hadn’t lived long enough to have ever been in love, a pure soul that was brought back to life in this form by good fortune.
The Doge immediately fell in love with her. Every full moon, they repeated the romantic and moving love ritual . One day the Doge, confident of his power and pushed by desire, asked for more. And so, he asked a fisherman to trap the mermaid with a net, and the mermaid was then locked inside a big golden cage .
But can love exist without freedom? The answer was as obvious then as it is now. The mermaid, deprived of water and freedom started to fade. She became silent, sad, a victim of the man who, in the name of true love, had become her oppressor.
The Doge, who had never meant to make her suffer , returned her to the sea . The mermaid went back to her playful life amongst the marine creatures and the heart of the old Doge became peaceful forever.
To this day, during the full moon, from the waves of Saint Mark’s basin, a sinuous creature appears for those who feel true love. Her sweet songs warm the heart and clear the mind, because love overcomes anything, but there is no Love without Freedom .”
Therefore, remember: if you wish to get married in Venice or in any other part of the world,
make sure you forget every unnatural desire for possession,
because true Love is immune to that, as much as Happiness is.
